dentist-canton-michigan-south-lyon-gum-diseaseDid you know that four out of five people have undiagnosed gum disease?

Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is a potentially serious problem that affects a number of aspects of your oral health. This disease damages the gums and bones that support the teeth, eventually leading to swollen gums, loose teeth, and infected tissue.

What the signs and symptoms of gum disease?

  • Bleeding gums after brushing or using dental floss
  • Additional space between teeth caused by bone loss
  • Loose teeth caused by weakened periodontal fibers
  • Bad breath caused by bacteria trapped in the mouth
  • Pus around teeth and gums caused by infection
  • Tender or irritated gums caused by pockets of plaque
  • Loss of gum density around teeth

What Can I Expect for My Gum Disease Treatment?

Depending on the severity of your gum disease, there are several treatment options available. If caught early, having an additional teeth cleaning treatment performed within a few months from diagnosis is often sufficient. If the disease has advanced, a deep cleaning, also called scaling at root planning, is the recommended treatment. Deep cleaning involves numbing the mouth and removing tartar, bacteria, and plaque from deep from the gum line to encourages pockets to shrink and leads to faster healing of gum tissue.

In severe cases, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce the depth of gum pockets. This makes them easier to clean and increases the recovery rate. If you are showing any signs or symptoms of gum disease, early diagnosis and treatment is the most effective way to avoid costly and invasive treatments.
